The Ron Burton Training Village hosts 90-100 campers over a five-week session. Each morning the campers wake up at 4:30 a.m. and embark on a seven-mile run. After showers and breakfast they engage in a brief “Quiet Time” where they can read or meditate or simply take time to be placid and still. During the day the kids listen to inspirational speakers. Two to three days a week the campers have life-skills courses which address a wide variety of issues throughout the five weeks such as teen pregnancy, conflict-resolution and other needed skills such as how to manage a bank account and how to present one’s self for a job interview.
7-Mile Run - 5:45am
Every camper is taught how to swim. We engage in weight training and other physical activities. During the day the kids have lessons in geography, the Standard Aptitude Test (SAT) and computers. Each camper is required to read at least one book and have brief writing assignments that are confidentially reviewed with them so we can individually tutor them for improvements.
In the afternoon the campers are engaged in team-building activities and sports. The campers are put on eight different teams called “Huddles.” These huddles are purposely, racially integrated. After a time, the kids don’t even realize that someone, whom they may have viewed a little differently, isn’t anyone other than their teammate. Each day they play games such as volleyball, flag football, basketball, soccer, tennis, capture the flag, relay races and other fun sports activities. Through sports we teach teamwork, sportsmanship and camaraderie while teaching the morals of Christianity as a very important and necessary part of their lifestyle.
